Overpopulation Series

The complex issue of overpopulation and its impact on resource shortage, economics and climate change is explored in this series. Using the family tree as a ‘hook’, the three neckpieces each focus on a different aspect of this issue. In Christ Genealogy, the problematic relationship that many religions have with bearing children, contraception and the importance placed on knowing one’s ancestors is recognised. In Personal Genealogy, four generations of Katherine’s own family are traced back to a single paternal great-grandfather, acknowledging that her own family has contributed hundreds of people in a short period of time. Generic Genealogy, is a pictorial and wearable representation of what would happen if every couple only had one child.

The squares are a minimalist representation of condom packets, highlighting the arguments religions and nations have over contraception, grey is for males, white is for females and the red jump rings are acknowledging blood relationships.
